Foundation covers your child’s education in Reception class (ages 4-5)
Reception
Reception is the year after Pre-school and the introduction year to Key Stage 1. During this year,
the children are introduced to phonic sounds through songs, games, flashcards, and stories.
Mathematics is taught through songs and counting activities. Through these activities the class explore quantity to 10,
recognition of numerals 1 - 15, writing numbers to 10 and counting to 20 forwards and backwards.
Through reception, the class works on pencil control and pre-writing skills (tracing letters and names). The children are
introduced to reading through names then small words (CVC) and sight words.
Reception discovers many topics by exploring and expanding previous knowledge through Personal, Social and Emotional Development,
Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development, Creative Development, Mathematical development and Communication,
language and literacy development. These learning areas are all related to ‘All About Me’ and ‘The World’.
