Year One
Year 1 is the first stage of Key Stage 1. During this year the children explore phonics in more detail and are introduced
to grammar.
It is during this year that the class gains a concrete foundation for their reading and writing skills and are introduced
to spelling
sight words and CVC words.
The children are taught literacy and numeracy for 1 hour a day. It is during year 1 that the children take part for the first
time in
cross-curricular activities (cross-curricular being science, history, geography and PSHE). Topics
covered are; the School, Journeys and Holidays, Me, the Seasons, Animals and My World.
The numeracy curriculum explores numbers through counting, adding and subtracting, introduction to measurements, 2D shapes and discovering
3D shapes, and an introduction to the concept of time.
Year Two
Year 2 is the last stage of Key Stage 1. During this year the class studies intensively phonics and grammar in order to
allow the children to gain the needed skills and confidence before reaching Key Stage 2. Emphasis this year is on practicing
spelling and grammar through fiction, short stories, poetry, and creative writing.
The class takes part in monthly cross-curricular projects which combine English, Science, Geography, History and PSHE
curriculum objectives. The projects include Life 100 Years Ago, Flat Stanley book, the Olympics, the human body, all about me,
water, world cultures, and organizing a theatre production.
The numeracy objectives are to allow the child to gain confidence in addition, subtraction, explore shapes and time,
an introduction to sharing and multiplication, place value, analyzing data, counting to 1000, and an introduction to money.
