Year Three
Year 3 is where the children enter Key stage 2 of the British National Curriculum. The bulk of teaching
is approached in a cross-curricular way, combining English, Science, Geography, History and PSHE into individual
learning projects.
Year 3 is the stage where children move towards becoming independent and confident in their reading and writing skills,
gaining from the opportunity of doing creative writing, active researching, analyzing books and preparing presentations.
This stage is fundamental for the development of each child’s literacy skills. Numeracy skills continue to be developed and
among other things, the class explores more intensively multiplication, division, fractions, calculating money and 3D shapes.
Year Four
At the end of year 4, the majority of children are rapidly gaining confidence
and fluency in literacy and mathematics. Opportunities are planned by the teachers for the children to link
their learning in literacy and mathematics to practical experiences and learning in other curricular areas.
Homework is vital at this stage to secure past and ongoing learning. The children are introduced to a range of
fiction, poetry and non-fiction, and are encouraged to make choices of reading materials and develop preferences.
Narrative writing develops in length and structure. Non-fiction writing continues to develop through reports and
research projects.
